Shop Talk: TikTok Hearing

The future of TikTok dominated our Slack channel last week. Our big question — did those Congress Members really think they could get CEO Shou Zi Chew to spill the tea on his government? No big reveals from the hearing but a lot of great  #TikTokHearing posts with various recaps and a bit of Gen Z mockery. It’s a complicated issue when you consider the importance of the First Amendment, Big Tech’s ongoing use of Rule 230 for self-protection, the post-Covid rise of a #NewColdWar, and all the can’t-live-without #lifehacks videos.  We’ll wait to see in 2024 if the hearings caused a generation of soon-to-be voters to mobilize when they saw discovered how little their representatives know about daily life in our tech-driven world.
