As ecommerce sales continue to climb, social media companies are introducing new initiatives to get in on their share of the industry’s revenue. Facebook introduced a “Live Shopping Fridays” series, a live-streamed shopping experience with retailers where viewers can ask real-time questions and make purchases. Snap Inc. has a “shop” button that will take consumers into digital storefronts within the app where you can view videos, product catalogs and AR Lenses. And in the UK, TikTok has been working with select streetwear brands to test direct shopping options within the app before expanding them more broadly. The social media industry’s shift to ecommerce opens up a massive area of opportunity for the platforms as well as brands, allowing them to promote product directly to their audience.
